The project builds on years of development in the region, turizmus.com reports. Significant investment in infrastructure has created a cycling network of more than 1,200 kilometers of usable routes. The BalatonBike365 program plays a central role in this transformation.

At the heart of the initiative is a clear change in what cycling tourists expect.

"Cycling tourists today are no longer just looking for accommodation. The goal is to build a genuine quality network that ensures a consistently high standard throughout the entire Lake Balaton region,” said László Szilasi, the project’s technical lead.

To join the network, providers must meet strict technical standards. Properties carrying the Balaton Bike Hotel label are required to offer:

Secure bicycle storage, often locked or under video surveillance (in higher categories, bikes may even be stored in rooms using protective covers)
On-site charging stations for e-bikes, along with bicycle washing facilities
Basic repair tools available for guests
Continuous quality checks and feedback systems to ensure rapid resolution of any issues.

The network also features a dedicated online platform.

Its four-language website (German, English, Italian, and Hungarian) allows users to filter accommodations based on the features most relevant to their trip.

Participating businesses also stand out through their local expertise. Instead of standard tourist brochures, guests receive personalized route suggestions tailored to families, e-bike riders, road cyclists, or gravel enthusiasts, along with recommendations for reliable local cycling service providers. The network is currently in a testing phase, and no new members will be added this year while the system is refined.

The growth of cycling tourism in the region is already visible in the data. At the Balaton Bike Tour rental network, a partner of BalatonBike365, rentals increased by nearly 56% between 2023 and 2025, rising from 13,961 to 21,824. Automated counters also confirm the trend:

In 2025, nearly 170,000 cyclists were recorded in Balatonszárszó and over 136,000 in Örvényes.
These figures also show that the cycling season is stretching longer, starting earlier in spring and continuing well into autumn.

Overall, the BBH network helps reduce Lake Balaton’s dependence on the traditional summer beach season. It highlights the region’s broader appeal beyond lake holidays and strengthens its position as one of Central and Eastern Europe’s leading destinations for active tourism.
