Inflation has soared so incredibly over the last three decades since the iconic film, “Home Alone 2,” aired that Kevin McCallister’s memorable $1,000 Plaza Hotel dessert indulgence looks like pennies on the dollar — compared to its price tag today.
The lavish spread, which famously included a 16-scoop ice cream sundae, would run an incredible $2,233 in today’s dollars, as the ritzy hotel has kept pace with the rising cost of living, an analysis by travel insurance comparison service, iSelect found.
“Kevin, you spent $967 on room service?” the Macaulay Culkin character’s dad, Peter McCallister, screams in the closing scene of the 1992 blockbuster — his outrage so severe that his voice reverberates through Central Park.
Today, the meal alone would cost more than Kevin’s entire Big Apple excursion in 1992 money.
The trip — from the suite to the sundae — would run $8,511 in 2025, compared to the now-measly $2,109 bill back in 1992, according to iSelect. And that’s not counting the limos or taxis Kevin indulged in.
That’s thanks to a 303% spike in inflation across the bougie hotel’s prices over the last 33 years — since the film’s debut — which iSelect determined by comparing pricing from the Plaza, inflation data and updated menu costs.
