From the caption of this post: "The storm of the decade has arrived in the Andes ❄️❄️❄️ 70cms of new snow in the last 24 hrs and expecting over 2.5 meters in the next few days (That’s over 8 feet of snow! 😱)"

Like any good ski writer, I popped over to the long-range weather forecast to cross-check Ski Portillo's claim to fame, and I'm happy to report that a truckload of snow is indeed on the way.

Here are the anticipated daily snowfall totals at Portillo for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday this coming week via snow-forecast.com:

Monday: 10.3 inches

Tuesday: 28.7 inches

Wednesday: 12.2 inches

If you're like me and can't do math in your head, that's a whopping 51 inches or 4.2 feet of snow over the next few days.

Eagle-eyed readers, I know what you're thinking: "But Ski Portillo said they would get 8 feet of snow this week, not 4 feet? What's going on here?"

There are a few possibilities. Ski Portillo could be pulling from a different forecast than I did. Or, since the resort shared that Instagram caption yesterday, they were accounting for an additional day in their snowfall estimations.

I've scoped forecasts other than the snow-forecast.com one shared here that mirror Ski Portillo's claim to 8 feet of fame. And ones that predict less than 52 inches. It's all a complicated guessing game.

But honestly, when you're talking about the difference between 3 feet, 4 feet, or 8 feet, who really cares? Either way, it's more snow than any of us would know what to do with. Heck, I'm excited when my local is reporting 4 inches of snow.

And, ultimately, this incoming storm isn't about inches and forecasts; it's about our South American friends getting a taste of what we North American skiers enjoyed last winter: bottomless powder skiing.

Stay tuned for more updates as the "storm of the decade" continues to batter Ski Portillo this week.
