Syria’s Ministry of Tourism opens five-star heritage hotel in Damascus

International news
Syria’s Ministry of Tourism has opened a new five-star hotel in the heart of Damascus, the Khan Suleiman Pasha Hotel, signalling renewed momentum in the country’s journey to revive its tourism sector after more than a decade of conflict.

Located on the historic Medhat Pasha Street within the Unesco-listed Old City of Damascus, the property is housed within a restored Ottoman-era caravanserai — a historic inn for travelling merchants — that dates back to 1736. The restoration was led by the Wahoud Group, which sought to preserve the building’s original character while adapting it to meet modern hospitality standards.

Blending heritage and contemporary design, the 25-room hotel features authentic Ottoman architecture, including original stonework featuring Arabian ablaq techniques of two-tone structures, alongside Damascene arches.

In addition to Khan Suleiman Pasha, the Ministry of Tourism revealed that a former Sheraton Damascus Hotel will also be redeveloped as a Seven Gates Hotel, scheduled to open in 2028.
