In October 2024, the historic Tropicana was demolished to make way for the new A’s ballpark. The Tropicana, which opened in 1957, was once the most glamorous resort in Las Vegas, ushering in an era of opulence and mob bosses. In the 21st century, however, it became better known for its decrepitude, falling into neglect as Bally’s failed to update the hotel, knowing it was awaiting the wrecking ball.
A new rendering shows a 35-acre lot with the A’s stadium in the middle of the action. Around the ballpark are retailers, restaurants and entertainment venues, including a 2,500-seat theater. On the corners of the lot are two “luxury” hotel towers that Bally’s says will have 3,000 total rooms. That’s nearly double the size of the Trop, which had about 1,500 rooms when it was demolished.
A multistory parking garage is also behind the stadium, and two pedestrian walkways over the roadways connect the area with the Excalibur and MGM Grand. The project, if completed like it appears in the rendering, will completely transform the southern end of the Strip, which is a sad collection of aging hotels like Luxor and empty construction sites.
