Medical travel in India to hit $13B

International news
Medical travel in India is projected to reach $13 billion by 2026, up from $6 billion in 2022, according to Union Minister of Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. The growth is linked to India’s clinical capabilities and the integration of modern medicine with traditional wellness systems.

The growth reflects India’s ability to provide healthcare through accredited institutions and experienced medical professionals, Shekhawat said. He was speaking at the 6th FICCI Medical Value Travel Awards during Advantage Healthcare India 2026,

Shekhawat also said initiatives such as Heal in India, simplified visas and medical and wellness hubs are central to the government’s approach to improving access and patient confidence.

India’s Union Budget 2026–27 made tourism central to employment, infrastructure and regional development. However, the industry’s demand for infrastructure status remains unmet.
