Iconic Atlantic Hotel in Newquay given one star food hygiene rating

International news
An iconic hotel in a seaside town in Cornwall has been told to make major improvements after its latest food hygiene inspection. The Atlantic Hotel in Newquay has been handed a one star rating by inspectors from Cornwall Council.

The restaurant on Dane Road was visited by an Environmental Health Officer (EHO) on February 12 and a full inspection of the premises was carried out. It was found that improvement is necessary when it comes to Atlantic Hotel’s hygienic handling of food, including the areas of preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage.

The inspector also found that improvement is necessary with regard to the cleanliness and condition of facilities and buildings, and that major improvement is necessary when it comes to the restaurant’s management of food safety.

According to the Food Standards Agency, this means that Atlantic Hotel’s restaurant needs to ensure it has a "system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future."

John George, general manager of the Atlantic Hotel said: "The environmental health officer is happy for us to continue trading and to carry out the remedial work to fulfil our obligation."
