Finnish company proposes 250-room floating hotel on Vancouver waterfront

International news
City council will decide March 31 whether to refer a rezoning application to a future public hearing for a proposed 250-room floating hotel that would be moored in a water lot near the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Sunborn Group, a family-owned hospitality company founded and headquartered in Finland, is behind the project. The six-deck vessel, which would be built off-site, would include a restaurant, shops, spa and viewing deck, all of which will be publicly accessible.

The company has been developing and operating purpose-built floating hotels for more than 25 years. Currently, their portfolio includes boutique floating hotels at the Royal Victoria Docks in London and Gibraltar.

Vancouver Harbour Flight Centre Ltd., on behalf of the B.C. Pavilion Corporation — owner of the lands at 1055-1085 Canada Pl. and 1001-1045 West Waterfront Rd. — has applied for use of a portion of a water lot for the project.

The hotel would operate like a normal building on land, with no discharge to the water.
