FIFA has canceled thousands of hotel rooms reserved for this year's World Cup across multiple host cities, including Philadelphia and Mexico City.
In Philadelphia, approximately 2,000 rooms were canceled by FIFA out of 10,000 initially blocked, according to the Greater Philadelphia Hotel Association.
FIFA did not provide a reason for the cancellations in Philadelphia, but the organization acted within its contract terms without penalty.
Mexico City also saw cancellations, with 800 of 2,000 rooms (40 percent) booked by FIFA being rescinded, as reported by El Financiero.
Hotel association officials in both cities suggest the cancellations might be due to FIFA initially overbooking rooms as a precaution, and they anticipate the rooms will be rebooked by fans.
