Upon arrival, the responding officer met with the hotel manager who displayed security footage from Dec. 24.
According to police documents, the footage showed a man riding a white bicycle, later identified as 32-year-old Maurice Claybrooks, entering the hotel and proceeding to the fourth floor. Claybrooks was then observed trying to open several doors on the fourth floor before accessing one of the rooms and entering. Officers said that he stayed in the room for one minute.
After exiting, Claybrooks reportedly traveled to the third floor and attempted to gain access to additional rooms. Unsuccessful, he went back up to the fourth floor where he was questioned by a staff member.
Claybrooks was then seen flashing a room key card to the staff member and using it to open the door of the room that he had successfully entered on the fourth floor, then exiting and leaving the property behind.
In the hotel security footage, Claybrooks was seen wearing an orange North Face jacke, which helped the officer identify him as the suspect booked into jail on Dec. 28 on several thefts at nearby hotels and motels
Hotel records dating back to a year ago confirmed that Claybrooks had never booked a room in the St. George Comfort Suites.
The responding officer initiated a meeting between himself, Claybrooks and the victim of this burglary who was staying in the broken-into hotel room. The victim confirmed they were lodging alone and had not invited anyone else into their room. Due to this incident, they checked out a day early, on the same day the incident occurred.
No items, including any room key cards, were reported as stolen.
Claybrooks was booked into the Purgatory Correctional Facility on a second degree felony charge of burglary of a dwelling with intent to commit a theft.
