Billionaire to sell infamous Las Vegas Strip hotel Circus Circus

Billionaire Phil Ruffin is looking to sell one of the Las Vegas Strip’s most infamous properties, but whether or not this spells the end of Circus Circus remains to be seen.

In a Friday interview with Forbes, Ruffin revealed he’s planning on selling the garish casino that he bought in 2019. At the time, Ruffin boasted he was going to add a sand-bottom pool and 2,000-seat theater, along with investing $60 million into renovations. But despite some cosmetic improvements, Circus Circus remains largely unchanged.

“Why do you think I bought Circus Circus? For the 102 acres,” Ruffin told Forbes. “That’s the land play.”

Once the site of the Strip’s only RV park, Circus Circus occupies a huge footprint by Strip standards. But despite the recent additions of Resorts World and the Fontainebleau nearby, the northern end of Las Vegas Blvd. is nowhere near as bustling as the rest of the street. It takes at least 40 minutes to walk from Circus Circus to the center of the Strip, and the nearest monorail station is half a mile away. Last year, rooms were going for $38 a night — and it’s not hard to see why.

Ruffin, however, believes the property is worth $5 billion. And now may be the time to sell; a proposed NBA arena is supposed to go into the lot next to Fontainebleau in the near future.

“When Ruffin sells Circus Circus, he plans to buy another property on the Strip with the proceeds,” Forbes reported. Ruffin, 89, also owns Treasure Island and shares ownership of Trump International Tower with his longtime friend Donald Trump.
