The two projects, which together will add around 12,000 hotel rooms and serviced apartments, are part of a broader push to expand accommodation capacity and build event-ready infrastructure ahead of the APEC Leaders’ Week.

On Jan. 28, the Phu Quoc special administrative authority and Sun Group broke ground on the Bai Dat Do mixed-use urban area and the Nui Ong Quan eco-tourism mixed-use urban area, two of 21 major infrastructure projects tied to APEC 2027.

Once completed, the developments will provide large-scale lodging, commercial centers and new urban spaces designed to serve diplomatic events, international conferences and high-end tourism, while reshaping Phu Quoc’s urban and coastal landscape.

The Bai Dat Do project, spanning more than 88 hectares with total investment of about VND64 trillion, is planned along the APEC Boulevard and will feature high-rise hotel complexes, shopping centers, public squares and seaside open spaces.

Located next to the APEC Convention and Exhibition Center, it is expected to deliver nearly 6,500 accommodation units, targeting conference guests, luxury travelers, and official delegations.

The second project, the Nui Ong Quan eco-tourism mixed-use urban area, covers more than 21 hectares with investment of roughly VND5.55 trillion. Designed as an eco-urban complex integrating lodging, services and retail, it is expected to add around 5,200 serviced apartments.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh described APEC 2027 as a particularly important diplomatic event for Vietnam, stressing that infrastructure readiness will be critical to its success. He said Phu Quoc is currently rolling out 21 projects for the summit with participation from central ministries, local authorities and private investors.

The prime minister called on developers to ensure construction progress, quality, worker safety and environmental protection, while prioritizing green development, digital transformation, smart management and balanced benefits for the state, businesses and residents.

According to An Giang provincial authorities, the 21 APEC-related projects include 10 public investment projects and 11 public-private partnership or commercial investment projects, all of which have now completed key investor or contractor selection steps.

The 30th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, themed "Connecting, building inclusive and resilient economies," is seen as a milestone for Vietnam's regional role and a rare opportunity for Phu Quoc to position itself as a future hub for global meetings, trade and international cooperation.
