Uchida Design Inc. – the studio set up by the late Shigeru Uchida, who oversaw the hotel’s original interiors – has given Il Palazzo a major interior refresh. Iconic details such as the striped onyx and wood floors remain in place but are accompanied by new bespoke furniture created by the studio.

Colour is now a significant presence in the hotel’s communal spaces, with electric green and bright yellow all playing a part. This is particularly true for the new entrance, located in what was once the doorway to the downstairs nightclub and lit by an intense, royal blue glow. The nightclub, dubbed El Dorado, is a 130-seat lounge featuring a glowing light installation and water artwork, both created by Uchida and creating a play of light and shadow in the space. Guest rooms have also been redesigned but to a less dramatic degree and are washed in muted tones and gentle light. They start from around £120 per night.
