Royal family housekeeping job paying less than popular hotel chain for same role

A housekeeping job with the Royal Family is offering a lower wage than a similar position at a three-star Premier Inn, making the hotel chain a potentially better option for job seekers. Now, King Charles is looking to hire a housekeeper for the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

Responsibilities include maintaining the historic residence. However, the role pays just £12.60 per hour - falling short of the £13.39 hourly rate offered at the London Kew Bridge Premier Inn.

The Premier Inn job also includes 20 additional hours per week, making it a more lucrative opportunity. In contrast, the Royal Family’s housekeeping role requires a 7am start, with shifts spread across Monday to Sunday. According to What’s The Jam, housekeepers may also be required to travel to other royal residences across the UK.

Applications for the Royal Household position close on February 9, with the job listing emphasising the chance to gain new skills and work in a unique setting. The Royal Household stated: “It’s being encouraged to gain new skills. And it’s delivering extraordinary service in incredible surroundings.

“This is what makes a career with the Royal Household so different. “This is your opportunity to use your enthusiasm and interest in hospitality to deliver the exceptional.”

Premier Inn stated: “Use your management skills and passion for cleaning to take your housekeeping team to greater heights and be part of the UK’s leading hospitality business.”
